When to Go

San Pedro de Atacama is one of the driest places on the planet — under 15 mm of rain a year — and can be visited at any time of year. The Apr–Nov period is the most recommended: stable skies, pleasant warmth by day and moderate cold at night.

The austral winter (Jun–Aug) offers maximum stability and exceptional visibility — ideal for stargazing — but nights drop to 0–5°C and call for heavy warm clothing.

The summer (Dec–Mar) is the only caveat: the Altiplanic Winter (or Bolivian Winter) brings humidity from the Amazon to the Altiplano. It doesn't rain in San Pedro, but storm clouds build on the horizon at dusk and can cover the night sky — especially in Jan–Feb. The high-altitude roads to Géiseres del Tatio (P5), Salar de Atacama (P6) and the Salt Flats Route (P7) are more prone to mud.

The Atacama is the best place in the world for astronomical observation: 2,438 m of altitude, humidity below 10%, more than 300 clear nights a year and a horizon free of light pollution in every direction. The Milky Way projected as a solid band, Magellanic Clouds visible to the naked eye and thousands of stars — no wonder the region is home to ALMA, the VLT and soon the ELT. The galactic center sits at the zenith in Jun–Jul (visible from Mar to Oct); combined with a new moon in those months it is the peak of the experience — the calendar marks these windows with 🌌. In the other windows, the absolute darkness already guarantees a spectacle most people have never seen.

🌑 New moon windows — 7 days with the new moon on the 4th day, the darkest nights of each month. Ideal to combine with the Astronomical Tour (P2).

Getting There

Step 1 · International Flight
Brazil → Santiago (SCL)
There is no direct flight from Brazil to San Pedro. The mandatory point of entry is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago. Cities with direct flights:
  • GRU (São Paulo)~3h30 · direct
  • GIG (Rio de Janeiro)~4h00 · direct
  • POA (Porto Alegre)~2h00 · direct
  • FLN (Florianópolis)~2h30 · direct

Airlines: LATAM, GOL, Azul. Brazilians do not need a visa — a valid passport or RG ID card (issued less than 10 years ago).
Stage 2 · Domestic Flight
Santiago → Calama (CJC)
San Pedro has no airport. The closest one is El Loa Airport (CJC) in Calama, 100 km away.
  • SCL → CJC~2h10
  • Frequencydaily flights

Airlines: LATAM, Sky Airline, JetSMART. Minimum recommended connection in SCL: 2h30.

Important tip: buying both flights (international + domestic) through LATAM on the same booking is safer — if the first flight is delayed, LATAM automatically rebooks the second. If you buy them from different airlines, a delay on the international leg can mean losing the domestic flight entirely, with no right to a refund. Sky operates a direct GRU → CJC flight (from São Paulo only — check availability by season).
Stage 3 · Option A · Transfer
Calama → San Pedro · Transfer
The most practical option. ~1h15 along Ruta 23, a straight shot across the desert. Counters right in the airport.
Available for flights arriving between 6:40 am and 9:00 pm. Return: pickup ~3h30 before the flight. High season: book in advance.
Stage 3 · Option B · Rental Car
Calama → San Pedro · Car
A good option for independence on the nearby tours. For high altitude and unmarked trails, a tour operator is still recommended.
Only one gas station in San Pedro — fill up in Calama first. Download offline maps (GPS fails on dirt roads). Ruta 23 (Calama → San Pedro) is paved and safe. Compare prices on Rentcars.com before choosing.

Getting Around

The 7 tours here are organized as an optimized driving itinerary — your own car or one rented in Calama. The core logic is grouping by direction: each group sets out on the same road, eliminates backtracking and makes the most of every stretch driven. Within each group, the sequence follows the altimetry — lower-altitude tours first, so the body acclimatizes progressively before the extreme elevations of the Tatio (4,320 m) and the Rota dos Salares (4,500 m).

Each tour stands alone — you don't have to do them all, or follow the suggested order. The itinerary was designed for 7 to 10 days with full autonomy: no fixed schedule, no waiting for a group, no dependence on transfers. You set the pace, stop wherever you like at each point and decide on the spot whether it's worth extending the day. The only exception is the Astronomy Tour (P2), which requires an operator given the technical nature of the equipment and the experience.

For those who prefer complete logistical comfort — no driving on dirt roads, with hotel pickup, meals and a guide included — the operators below offer their own full packages. Their itineraries differ at some points from the ones presented here, and each has its own prices, schedules and formats. Contact them directly to compare what best fits your trip.
